Whether it’s from a sick child or a pet eating something they shouldn’t, many of us have had the unfortunate task of cleaning up vomit. Cleaning vomit out of a carpet can be especially difficult, as if not done properly the stain and smell will linger, potentially ruining the carpet.
Thankfully, there are ways to easily and effectively clean vomit out of a carpet, leaving no trace that it was ever there. The following 3 methods will help you get the worst out of your carpet, making it look brand new.
Cleaning up vomit immediately
When cleaning vomit out of a carpet, you’ll want to get it done as soon as possible. Leave it too long and it may set deeper into the carpet and the floor underneath, which will make it considerably more difficult to remove. If you spot fresh vomit on your carpet, take the following steps:
- Put some dishwashing gloves on
- Using a spoon or other utensil, scrape up the vomit and place it in a bin bag.
- Use either white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide (not both), diluted with water in a spray bottle.
- Spray over the area the vomit was on.
- Dry the area with a towel.
If done correctly, this method should completely remove the stain and smell.
Cleaning up dried vomit
Despite your best efforts, you may not notice vomit until it is completely dried. Luckily, this can still be easily cleaned using the previous method. To remove dried vomit, simply dampen the area thoroughly before using a utensil to scrape up the dried vomit. You can then repeat the steps of the previous method until the spot has completely gone.
Use additional equipment
If you want to completely remove any traces of vomit, consider using a mixture of lemon juice and baking soda on the carpet- this will cause a chemical reaction that will break down the protein and acid in the vomit.
Once this is done, use a carpet steamer to remove any faint traces of vomit stains on the carpet.
