Understanding the Basics of Carpet Flood Damage

After flooding, carpets are soaked in water, which could cause a variety of issues. One common issue caused by flooding is the formation of mould. This is why carpet flood damage needs to be acted on as soon as possible.

Different Types of Floodwater

Bear in mind that not all types of floodwater damage will be restorable.

Category 1: Clean water from a pipe or rainwater that has not been mixed with contaminants.

It is more than possible to save carpet damage in this category if it has been wet for less than 48 hours. Experts will be able to restore both padding and carpet through a thorough sanitation and remediation procedure.

Category 2: Greywater that is contaminated, meaning that it can cause sickness. This includes washing machine and dishwasher water, toilet overflows and broken aquariums.

In this case, the carpet can be saved but the padding will need to be replaced. Both need to be done within 48 hours of the flooding.

Category 3: Blackwater is highly contaminated with pathogens or other harmful agents. This could include sewage, flooding from seawater, rivers, streams, and water from hurricanes and storms.

Unfortunately, flood damage of this category is almost impossible to restore, so you will need a carpet replacement.

Every flood damage scenario is different. In most cases, you will not know if your carpet can be saved until an expert restoration company has analysed the flood damage for you. Remember to act swiftly after the flooding because in most cases if the flood damage is left longer than 48 hours then it will not be able to be restored.
