Living ant-free is easier said than done. But, there are natural remedies and pest control techniques out there that you can attempt at home! If you’re struggling with ants but perhaps the outbreak isn’t severe enough to warrant professional aid, the following treatments are proven to be effective:
1. Natural Repellents
There are a range of natural ant repellents that can be found in most New Zealand kitchens. Sprinkling black pepper or cinnamon can deter ants from crossing into certain areas, or breaking into your home through your windows and doors. Other repellents that you can purchase include the substance ‘diatomaceous earth’. This is a powder made from fossilised algae that is completely harmless to humans, but deadly to insects. As such, it is a viable method of ant control, although perhaps not accessible to every homeowner!
2. Vinegar Solution
Ants strongly dislike the scent of vinegar. You can mix equal parts of vinegar and water to create a homemade ant control solution. This solution can be poured into a spray bottle, or, with a cloth, used to wipe down surfaces near the windows and doors where ants enter most.
Of course, this solution is a deterrent and not a killer – pest control is often centred on minimising infestation, rather than damaging the bugs themselves, although sometimes extreme measures are required.
3. Essential Oils
Even some essential oils have been found to deter ants with their natural ant-repellent properties. Particular standouts include strong-smelling peppermint, tea tree and citrus oils. Citronella oil also has a powerful odour that is extremely effective at driving away bugs! But, don’t use these essential oils undiluted, as their scent may affect you!
We recommend mixing a few drops of your chosen essential oil with water, and spraying it around the areas where the ants enter and frequent. Spray generously, and be sure to close your windows and doors firmly at night.
4. Seal Entry Points
A measure that professional pest-controllers often take – in tandem with their professional treatment plans – is sealing the entry points where ants may break into your home. Ants squeeze through the tiniest cracks and openings in your property, often around windows, doors and your utilities. Fill any holes, cracks and chips with caulk to prevent ants from working their way indoors. Caulk can be purchased at any local hardware store, if you don’t have any at home.
